In graphic design, there is a need for control and preciseness that simply doesn’t exist in raku. Hand building allows for beauty to be found in the imperfections. Raku glazing is anything but predictable, often making for a physical rush as the piece is pulled from the trashcan. You do have minimal control as to whether to oxidize (crackle) your piece or to totally deprive it of air and have a reduction effect, which often results in iridescence and flashing. However, the influence of the combustibles as well as “mother nature” can vary your results each time, allowing for the element of surprise. |
